FIIO E10K DAC & Headphone AMP - Clear Sound Review

Today's review is of the nifty little FIIO E10K. This little external USB DAC headphone amp combo is an affordable option to get decent sound from any laptop equipped with a USB 2.0 port or higher. For the uninitiated, it serves as an external sound card.

This little device will greatly improve the weak and muddy sound from your computer's headphone jack. The FIIO E10K has a built-in headphone amp that can power headphones up to 150Ω. This should suffice for most audio enthusiasts who don't need to power high impedance headphones. Since many headphones are less than 150Ω this product will suffice for a majority of people. There is also a line out in the back to connect the device to the auxiliary-in, of your entertainment setup.

The FIIO E10K does not require proprietary drivers to work on modern operating systems. It uses the tried and tested built-in generic sound drivers in the operating system. Just plugin and give it a moment for the operating system to install the device and you are good to go. While this may seem simple the device is anything but; boasting a signal to noise ratio of 108db and PCM-5102 DAC. The lower the signal to noise ratio the less desirable the audio signal becomes; many of the shelf computers have a signal to noise ratio of less than 100db. The technicalities aside this little DAC is comparable to many competing products over the $100 mark even though it can be found below $100.

I found the sound detail improved over Realtek and VIA onboard sound solutions found in laptops and desktops of today. The volume also improves significantly. The sound is more or less balanced. Bass heads should not fear as the bass boost function will result in a more V-shaped sound signature with more emphasis on bass and treble when turned on. I highly recommend this product for anyone who desires better sound from their laptop or desktop computer. I use this to connect my laptop to the stereo in the hall for pleasantly detailed sound. Its lightweight makes it an ideal device for traveling for an upgraded headphone experience.
