Have you ever purchased an expensive laptop for it to fall short in one or more critical areas, such as keyboard feel, trackpad performance or getting too hot. It really does not matter how powerful and feature packed a laptop is if it cannot perform as expected. Sadly, many laptop models today tend to sacrifice in one area or the other with regard to user the experience. While poor performance as a result of the lack of refinement is primarily a problem in the budget segment it is by no means limited to it. Even high end models can indeed succumb to performance related issues. The reason for this I have found is even though high quality components are generally used to manufacture high end laptops, these machines come with design constraints introduced by the very same high end components. For example, having the fastest I7 central processor is of no practical use if the laptop cannot stay cool because the I7 tends to get hotter than budget processors during demanding tasks. High temperatures usually result in the machine running slow to protect itself by design. Since the central processor is basically the brain of the computer if it slows down due to excessive heat then it does everything slower. If the parts inside get too hot damage can also occur. Often design choices are made to build the laptop with the sole intention of keeping the internals cool and this approach can usually backfire as the user experience takes a back seat. Trackpad and keyboard use tends to be unergonomic and in some instances the heat from the components underneath can cause discomfort when typing on the surface.
So what is the perfect laptop? This would ideally be a machine in which the user experience becomes seamless. When using the device your focus is primary on the task you set out to achieve on the device and at no point should you be distracted from you task as a result of a design flaw.
This is where the 2020 Dell XPS 15 and 17inch laptops really hit their mark. Boasting beautiful edge to edge screens with 4K resolution with OLED technology that can cut through glare, elegant solidly built chassis which are never uncomfortable to the touch, keyboard and trackpad that can be used effortlessly, internal cooling system that performs well, internals that are not restricted in performance due to thermal limits, good battery performance and a truly portable form factor.
While the specifications are generous the actual usage scenario is spot on as everything feels as good as you expect it to be. That's not something you see everyday. So then why is it almost perfect? While general usage scenarios tick all boxes more specific scenario such as competitive gaming is not the strong point here. While the models in question can handle some gaming they are not built to excel at it. Check out the DELL XPS 15 laptop currently sold by Amazon below.
