Astronomers have noticed a nearby star called Betelgeuse in the constellation of Orion dimming and some theorize that it is about to explode. But fear not Betelgeuse is 642.5 million light years away and the devastating supernova is not expected to cause harm on earth. However, in the event Betelgeuse goes supernova the resulting explosion can be seen with the naked eye during the day; yes its that bright.
Given that, in the event we see the star go supernova we are seeing ancient history as it would have actually gone supernova 642.5 million years ago even though the visible light is just reaching us now. As outdated as it is its still a cool event to witness a star go supernova during a lifetime without actually getting singed.
