According to Plato who lived around twenty five hundred years ago Atlantis was submerged under the sea following an earth quake. For centuries people have deliberated on the true location of Atlantis. Finally, there is credible evidence that Atlantis did in fact exist and in the most unlikeliest place, Africa. More precisely the Richat Structure in Mauritania in North West Africa. Legend has it that Mauritania was once ruled by a legendary king called Atlas, as told by the Mauri tribes residing in North Western Africa. According to Plato, the king of Atlantis was also called Atlas. The image below of the geographic feature know as the Richat structure has many of the similarities of Atlantis including the concentric rings, mountains to the North and evidence of a surrounding ocean that suddenly drained away.

The following picture featuring Richat gives a birds eye view of the regions geography. One can easily distinguish the signs of water erosion such as a inland sea being emptied in to the Atlantic ocean. The path taken by the water seems to cut right over the Richat structure marked by a blue pin in the center of the map

Plato's description of Atlantis which he claimed was handed down to him by the Egyptians who mentioned that Atlantis existed 9000 years ago at that time which would make the ancient city 11500 years old now. Moreover, it comprised of two concentric rings of land and three concentric rings of water with a central island. Additionally, as the general area was covered by ocean at the time the surrounding water was salty with the central island having freshwater springs. The Richat structure does share many of these characteristics including the presence of freshwater in the central island today even though the surrounding areas are desert. I feel given the evidence this is more than likely to be the true resting place of the legendary city of Atlantis. Alas there is one major discrepancy. This is the fact that the Richat structure now lies over 1000 feet above sea level. Nevertheless, if one looks at the evidence given by Plato and the geographic evidence a possible explanation exists. Since Atlantis was submerged under the sea following an earth quake. The likely explanation could be plate tectonics that raised the area; evidence for this being the earth quake preceding the deluge. Assuming what is now central Africa was forced up by plate tectonics, this would drain the sea occupying that region causing a deluge, evidence of which is in the second image above. The ancient people not being aware of what was happening suddenly found their city under water. It's plausible that the water drained away slowly, resulting in those that escaped to other lands having the memory of their city being submerged under water. Plate tectonics can also explain the high elevation of the Richat structure. Volcanoes can create new landmasses in the middle of the sea in short periods of time. In this instance I give the awesome power of nature the benefit of the doubt.
The following video from Bright Insight will illustrate this further.
